Guidance for writing your Personal Statement for the BA-programme

Basic information about the Personal Statement

  • The Statement should be written in English.
  • The Personal Statement is an essay with a clear structure, paragraphs and full sentences. It should give an accurate picture of your English proficiency. Never copy text from the internet or AI-powered writing tools.
  • Upload the Statement as a PDF file.
  • The purpose of the Statement is to convince the reader about your motivation and aptitude to study in the programme and complete it successfully. You can consider, for example, the following:
    • Please introduce yourself and describe your previous education.
    • Why do you want to study for a Bachelor’s in Business and Management degree? Is there a particular experience that has led you towards this path? How will the degree benefit you in the future?
    • What are your hobbies, interests, volunteering or other free time activities? How do you think they can support you in your personal and professional development?
    • Why are you interested in HELBUS?
    • What is your experience in using English outside of language classes? Do you feel confident that your level of English is good enough to achieve good grades?
    • What plans and dreams do you have for the future after your studies are finished?
  • Do reserve enough time for reflection and writing the Statement.
  • Draft your Statement for example in MS Word so that you can make use of spell-check tools.

The length of the statement

  • The length of the Statement should be a maximum of 3000 characters, including spaces. This is normally equivalent to about 500 words, or a maximum one A4 of dense text.
  • If you first write your Statement on, e.g., MS Word, the programme will calculate the number of characters/words used.

Don’t make these mistakes:

  • Never copy statements written by other people or found on the internet. Do not use artificial intelligence tools to generate your Statement. Your Statement must give an accurate picture of your own writing competencies and unique background. Your application may be rejected if we find out that your statement is not written in your own words.
  • Do not leave writing the Statement to the last minute!
  • Do not write too short of an essay. If your essay is too short, a member of our staff may be in contact and request for a new one.

Good luck with your application!
